Résumé du livre :

This original collection of 40 piano pieces by 27 early-American composers recalls a whole musical era that has been unjustly neglected in the twentieth century. Though some of the composers are fairly well known (Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Mrs. H. H. A. Beach, Victor Herbert, Edward MacDowell, William Mason, Ethelbert Nevin), many will be generally unfamiliar even to those interested in the period. The earliest piece dates from 1808; the latest is from 1906. There are works chosen for their intrinsic merit and fine quality; others are perfect examples of the era or are historically important. And, as the editor points out, many are just "absolutely delightful." To the best of our knowledge this is the only collection of serious early-American music currently available anywhere.

The two major forces in nineteenth-century American music are well represented here. There are the "Boston classicists" who looked to Europe for their inspiration-men like John Knowles Paine, Dudley Buck, Arthur Foote, George Chadwick, Arthur Whiting, Horatio Parker, Mrs. H. H. A. Beach. And the "American nationalists" who turned to and used native folk material-Anthony Heinrich, Carlos Troyer, Edgar S. Kelley, Harvey W. Loomis, Arthur Farwell, John Parsons Beach, Arthur Shepherd. This anthology contains, therefore, not only waltzes, études, rondos and impromptus, but Indian-inspired program music, and pieces based on patriotic tunes, children's songs, Negro minstrel material.

The individual works are of varying degrees of difficulty, and pianists of virtually any level can find pieces to match their needs. All the music, ranging in length from 2 to 18 pages, has been clearly reproduced from rare, original editions.

John Gillespie, Professor of Music, University of California, has written an infornative introduction and biographies of each composer. This collection fills a vital gap in our music literature, and is indeed essential to students, teachers
and performers
